Quick steps
- Pick your stateUse the finder at the top of this page or the state table further down. Every state keeps its own card records, so the state decides where the download sits.
- Open the ration card or citizen menuOn the state portal look for a menu usually named RC Details, Citizen Corner, e-Services or Ration Card Search. Labels change often, so read the menu slowly before tapping.
- Type your numberEnter the ration card number, or any listed member's Aadhaar where the portal has that box. Some states first ask for district, block and village from drop down lists.
- Clear the OTP or captchaMany portals send a one time password to the mobile linked with the card or with Aadhaar. Type it within the time shown, along with the captcha letters.
- Check every detailMatch the head of family, each member, the card category and the shop number. If something is wrong, note it down for a correction request.
- Print or save the cardTap Print or Download. On a phone choose Save as PDF in the print screen, name the file after the head of family and store it under Documents.
Ration card download in India always happens on your own state food portal: you open that portal, type your ration card number or Aadhaar, check the family details and keep the result as a PDF file. There is no single national button that gives everyone a card file, so the first job is finding the right state site, and the finder at the top of this page does that in two taps.
Below you will find how the e-ration card works, the four common ways to search for it, a table of the biggest states with their official portals, what each line on the card means, and fixes for the errors families meet most. We are an independent help site. Your card itself always comes from the government portal we point you to.

How e-ration card download works in India
Ration cards are issued by state governments under the National Food Security Act. Each state food department runs its own portal and keeps its own card database, so the e-ration card is really a printable view of your family record on that state site. The central NFSA portal does not hold card PDFs. It keeps a page that links every state ration card portal, which is a safe starting point if you are unsure of the address.
The central Mera Ration app is useful, but know its limits. Its official FAQ lists card details, monthly entitlement, transaction history, the nearest shop, One Nation One Ration Card help and grievances. It does not promise a downloadable card PDF, so do not expect one there. Our Mera Ration app guide covers what it can do.
Several states are moving to a central cloud system called SMART-PDS. During that move some old portal addresses stop working and menus get new names. If a link you saved last year is dead, start again from the finder or our ration card online directory of state portals.
How to download ration card online: four ways to search
1. By ration card number
This works in every state and is the most reliable. The number is printed on your old card, on the shop slip and in any SMS from the department. Type it without spaces.
2. By Aadhaar number
Where your Aadhaar is seeded into the card, many portals accept the Aadhaar of any member and send an OTP to the mobile linked with it. Full steps are in our page on ration card download by Aadhaar number.
3. By mobile OTP
Tamil Nadu and a few other states log you in with the phone number saved against the card. If that number is old or lost, the search fails until you change it, so see download by mobile number and the mobile number update guide.
4. By Family ID or by village
Haryana builds ration cards from the Parivar Pehchan Patra data, so you search with the Family ID, explained in Haryana download by Family ID. Bihar, Gujarat and Rajasthan let you open district, block and village lists and pick your card from the shop list, the same route described in our ration card list guide.

What the e-ration card shows
Layouts differ, but most state cards carry the same core lines. Check each one before you save the file.
| Field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Ration card number | Your family's ID in the state database. The shop machine and every portal search use it. |
| Head of family | Under NFSA this is normally the senior woman of the household. Changing this needs a correction request. |
| Members listed | Each person entitled to grain from this card. A missing child or spouse gets no grain until added. |
| Card category | AAY, PHH or a state category such as NPHH or APL. The category decides your quota; see ration card types. |
| Fair price shop | The dealer name or shop code where your card is tagged. |
| Address and area | District, block or town, and village or ward. |
| Aadhaar or eKYC mark | Some states show whether each member is seeded or verified, often as a masked number or a Y or N. |
| Photo | Only where the state stores one. Smart cards in Andhra Pradesh carry a family photo and QR code, while many state PDFs have no photo at all. |
Print, save or carry it on your phone
Most portals open the card as a web page with a Print button. On a phone, tap Print, then choose Save as PDF as the printer. On a computer, set paper to A4 and portrait, and turn on background graphics if the logo or colours are missing.
Maharashtra issues digitally signed e-ration cards through its RCMS system, and some states also place ration cards in DigiLocker, though this varies by state. At the shop, the dealer mostly goes by your card number and a fingerprint on the ePoS machine, so a printout is a backup rather than a must. If you want a wallet size plastic copy, read our PVC ration card guide first, because not every state recognises private prints.
Download errors and how to clear them
| What you see | Usual cause | Fix that works |
|---|---|---|
| Record not found | Old format number, wrong district picked, or a new card not yet approved | Copy the number from the shop slip, recheck the district, and look at your application status if the card is new |
| OTP never arrives | Mobile not linked, number changed, or a busy SMS gateway | Wait two minutes, try once more, then switch to the card number search or update the mobile at the supply office |
| Portal will not open | Heavy load, maintenance, or a move to a new system | Retry before eight in the morning or after ten at night, use mobile data instead of shared wifi, and open the address from the NFSA list |
| A member is missing | Never added, or removed after a failed eKYC | Finish ration card eKYC or apply to add the name |
| Spelling or address wrong | Typing error at data entry | Ask for a ration card correction, then download again after approval |
| Card shows inactive or cancelled | No ration lifted for months, eKYC pending, or found ineligible in a check | Check ration card status, then meet the shop dealer or block supply officer |
| PDF is blank or cut off | Page saved before it fully loaded | Wait for the full page, then print again in portrait with fit to page |
No card yet, or moved to a new place
A family without any card cannot download one. You first apply on the state portal or at a service centre, wait for field verification, and only then does the card appear online. Our new ration card application guide lists each state's route, and the ration card form page helps where states still want paper.
If you moved for work, One Nation One Ration Card lets NFSA members lift grain at any ePoS shop in India with their existing card number and fingerprint, so you may not need a new card at all. A permanent move is a different job, covered in ration card transfer. The ONORC helpline is 14445.
Safety while you look for your card
Search results are full of lookalike sites that copy state names and logos. Real state portals end in gov.in or nic.in. Treat any address ending in a blog or portal com name as unofficial, however official it looks.
One more trap: the app link labelled Ann Mitra on the NFSA home page now opens Anna Mitra, an app meant for shop dealers and inspectors, not for families. For grievances, the state toll free numbers are on the NFSA helpline list.
Questions people ask
Can I download my ration card online for free?
Yes. State portals let you view and save your own e-ration card without any charge. Printing at a common service centre may carry a small service fee, yet the card itself costs nothing.
Is there an NFSA ration card download for all of India?
No. The NFSA site only links to each state's portal through its state portals page. The card file always comes from your state food department.
Does the Mera Ration app give a ration card PDF?
Its official FAQ lists card details, entitlement, transactions, nearby shops and grievances, not a PDF download. Use the app to check details and the state portal to save the card. See our Mera Ration app page.
Will the ration shop accept a printed e-ration card?
In most states the dealer verifies you with the card number and Aadhaar fingerprint on the ePoS machine, so the printout mainly helps as proof of details. For other offices, ask in advance whether they accept a portal printout.
How do I download an old ration card that was made years ago?
If the card is still active, it is in the state database and downloads like any other card. Many states renumbered old cards during digitisation, so try the Aadhaar search if the old number fails, or ask the shop dealer for the new number.
Is a digital ration card download the same as a smart card?
The digital ration card download from a portal is a printable record. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have also issued QR coded smart cards, while states on SMART-PDS show details on new style portals. The card details page on your state portal gives the printable copy; the plastic card itself is handed out through the shop or the local office.
Why does the portal say record not found for my card?
Usually the number is typed wrong, the wrong district is selected, or the card is newly approved and not yet published. Check our ration card status hub for the state route, and have the shop dealer look up your number on the ePoS machine.
