Ration card download Tamilnadu: things to sort out before login
The portal does not ask for an Aadhaar number or a password at login. Everything depends on one thing: the mobile number linked to your family card. Before you start, check these points.
- The registered mobile: it may be the family head's old number. If you are not sure, ask the ration shop salesman; the SMS for each purchase goes to that number.
- The phone must be with you: the OTP comes only to that number, and it expires in a few minutes.
- The smart card number: the 12 digit number on the card is useful when you call the helpline or visit an office.
- Signal and data: the TNPDS site is heavy on slow networks. Try early morning or late evening if it keeps timing out.
The bot check page on tnpds.gov.in
Many people think the TNPDS site is broken because a strange verification page opens instead of the home page. This is the portal's own security screen, used to stop automatic traffic. It is normal.
- Wait for the page to finish loading, then tick the box or solve the picture check it shows.
- Switch off any VPN or data saver mode. Traffic from outside India is often blocked.
- If the check repeats again and again, clear the browser data for that site, or open it in a private tab.
- Do not search for a mirror site. Only the address ending in gov.in is the real portal.
What the smart family card page shows
Once the OTP works you see the same details that are printed on your plastic card, plus some that are not.
| Field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Smart card number | The 12 digit family number; quote it at the counter and on every form |
| Family head | Name and photo of the head of the family |
| Members | Names of all family members, their ages and how each is related to the head |
| Card type | One of five codes, from PHH-AAY down to NPHH-NC |
| Shop code | The fair price shop you are attached to |
| Transactions | Recent purchases with dates and items |
If a member is missing or a spelling is wrong, use our Tamil Nadu correction and address change guide.
Tamil Nadu smart card types and colours of entitlement
The code printed on your card decides what you get at the shop. Tamil Nadu uses five codes.
- PHH: Priority Household under the food security law. Full rice and other items.
- PHH-AAY, for Antyodaya Anna Yojana households, which are the most needy, with the largest rice quota per family.
- NPHH: non priority household. Gets rice and other items under the state scheme.
- NPHH-S: sugar card. Gets sugar instead of rice.
- NPHH-NC: no commodity card. Used only as a proof of identity and residence.
To change your card type, the taluk supply office decides after checking your family's details. The portal cannot change it by itself.

Ration card e KYC in Tamil Nadu
In Tamil Nadu the eKYC for every family member happens on the shop counter. The salesman's PoS machine reads the fingerprint and checks it against Aadhaar. There is no separate eKYC button on the TNPDS website for card holders.
- Every member on the card should go to the shop once with their Aadhaar card.
- Elderly members whose fingerprints are worn should tell the salesman; the shop and the taluk office know the other options in use.
- If the machine says Aadhaar not seeded, the member's Aadhaar has to be linked first through a correction request.
The eKYC is free. Nobody at the shop should ask for money for it.
When the TN ration card download fails
| Problem | Usual cause | Fix that works |
|---|---|---|
| OTP never arrives | Number on the card is old or switched off | Ask the shop which number is linked; change it through the portal or the taluk office |
| Site keeps loading | Bot check or slow network | Turn off VPN, wait for the check, try at a quieter hour |
| Mobile number not registered message | Card was made with another member's phone | Try the other family members' numbers |
| No download button | Option not shown for every card | Print the details page as PDF, or take a printout at an e-Sevai centre |
| Card shows a cancelled or suspended state | Not used for months or a check pending | Show the card and Aadhaar at your taluk supply office |
Change the registered mobile number on a Tamil Nadu ration card
Since the whole login depends on the mobile number, a lost SIM is the biggest reason people get stuck. For a ration card mobile number change online in Tamil Nadu, look for the change request or update section after login; it is usually listed with the address and member services. When the old SIM is gone for good, the taluk supply office or an e-Sevai centre has to do it for you. Carry the smart card and the family head's Aadhaar. After the change, every shop SMS and portal OTP goes to the new number.
Using the TNePDS app instead of the website
The TNePDS app from the state department shows the same smart card details after the same OTP login. Many people find it lighter than the website on a weak signal. Search TNePDS in the store app on the handset, and install it only when the developer listed is the state government. The app shows the stock at your shop and your purchases too. For a printed copy, the website or an e-Sevai centre is still easier.
Questions people ask
How to download ration card online in Tamilnadu as a PDF?
Sign in on tnpds.gov.in through the registered mobile OTP and open the card details. That is the TNPDS ration card download PDF route: use the portal button if it shows, or send the page to the PDF printer from your browser menu.
Is www.tnpds.gov.in the only place for a TN ration card download?
Yes, tnpds.gov.in and the TNePDS app are the department's own channels. An e-Sevai centre can also print it for you. Any other site only explains the steps.
Can I download my Tamil Nadu ration card without the registered mobile number?
No. The login needs an OTP on the number linked to the card. Change the number first through the portal or the taluk supply office, as explained in our correction guide.
Is a printout of the online card accepted at the ration shop?
Rice is given against the smart card QR scan and the fingerprint, so a paper copy matters more for school admissions and office proof. Carry the plastic card when you go for rice.
Where do I get a ration card download in Chennai if I have no internet?
Any e-Sevai centre in the city can log in for you and print the details, usually for a small service charge. The zonal assistant commissioner office for civil supplies also helps.
What is the TNPDS helpline number?
The department's toll free number is 1800 425 5901, and the national short code PDS helpline also reaches the state call centre. The call centre staff can confirm which phone number sits on your card.
