Quick steps
- Collect the proof for the reasonGet the death certificate, marriage certificate, or the new card or address proof of the person leaving. A clear phone photo or scan under the size limit is enough for upload.
- Sign in on the food department siteMost portals want the ration card number and a one time code sent to the family's registered phone. A few states send you through a common citizen services portal instead.
- Open the member deletion serviceThe menu is usually called Remove Member, Delete Member, Deletion of Name or Change in Ration Card. Pick the member and the reason.
- Upload proof and submitAttach the document, check the member name once more and submit. Save or screenshot the acknowledgement number shown at the end.
- Check the removal status after a weekUse Track Application or Application Status with the acknowledgement number. Approved means the next card copy and the shop machine will show the reduced list.

Your ration card name removal status shows whether the supply office has approved the request to delete a member, and you check it online on the state food site using the application or acknowledgement number. Most states also let you file the removal itself online, though a few still want a paper form at the office.
A name usually comes off for one of four reasons: the person has died, a daughter has married and joined her husband's card, someone has shifted to another state, or the person is listed on two cards. Below you will find the documents for each case, how different states take the request, and the follow up when the name stays on the card after weeks. Our main ration card help page lists every other service.

How to check ration card name removal status
Status pages are almost always under a menu named Application Status, Track Request or Know Your Application. Type the acknowledgement number exactly as printed, including any letters. You will see one of these stages:
| Status shown | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Submitted or Pending | The request has reached the office but nobody has opened it yet |
| Under verification | An inspector is checking the proof, sometimes with a home visit |
| Approved | The member is removed; download a fresh copy of the card |
| Rejected | Read the remark, fix the reason and apply again |
If you lost the number, the general application status guide explains how to search by card number or mobile in states that allow it.
Documents for each removal reason
- Death of a member: death certificate from the registrar or local body. Some offices accept a panchayat letter where the certificate is still being made.
- Marriage: marriage certificate or a wedding card with a local declaration, plus the husband's card number if she is being added there.
- Shifting out: the new card number or the new address proof, so the office can stop double entries.
- Duplicate entry: Aadhaar of the person and the other card number where the name also appears.
Remove name from ration card online: how states differ
The task is the same everywhere but each state has its own form and menu.
- Tamil Nadu: TNPDS offers a remove family member service after mobile OTP login. See our Tamil Nadu name removal page.
- West Bengal: the food department uses numbered forms; Form 7 is for surrender of a card and Form 14 when one member moves out to start a separate family card. Details are on our West Bengal correction page.
- Haryana: the card follows the Family ID record, so a death or marriage is updated in Family ID first and the ration card changes after that.
- Rajasthan: member changes start in the Jan Aadhaar family record, which then flows to the ration card.
Ration card surrender and cancel status
Deleting one member is different from cancelling the whole card. A full surrender is needed when the family moves to another state for good or when the only member has died. Most states give a surrender or cancellation certificate, which the new state may ask for. Some districts also publish a cancel list or delete list of cards removed after verification drives. If your card appears there by mistake, visit the supply office quickly carrying every member's Aadhaar, because restoration needs a fresh inquiry. Check whether your family is still active through the ration card list guide.
Name still showing after removal
| What went wrong | Why | Fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Status says approved but the name still shows | The shop machine updates later than the portal | Wait one distribution cycle, then ask the dealer to refresh the list |
| Rejected for unclear proof | Blurry upload or a mismatch in names | Upload a sharper copy; carry the original to the office if spelling differs |
| Wrong member removed | Selection error while filing | Apply to add the person back with an explanation letter |
| No online deletion menu | The state accepts it only on paper | Use the deletion form from our ration card forms page |
Offline route at the supply office
If online filing fails, go to the block, taluk or circle supply office with the original card or its printout, the proof and a short application in your own words. Ask for a receipt with a number on it. That receipt number is what you will use to follow up. Such requests can also go through a common service centre, which may charge modestly for typing and upload.
Questions people ask
How long does ration card name removal take?
Timing varies with the state and how busy the office is. Simple death cases with a proper certificate often move faster than marriage cases, which may need a field check. Keep checking the status with your acknowledgement number.
Can we remove name from ration card online without visiting the office?
In many states, yes, through the food portal or a citizen services portal. A few states still take the request only on paper, and an inspector may visit in any state.
Can I download a ration card name remove certificate?
Some states give a deletion or surrender certificate that can be printed from the status page once approved. If no download appears, ask the supply office for a signed copy.
How to remove family member from ration card if the head of family has died?
First apply for a change of head of family, naming a new adult member, and attach the death certificate. Many states treat both changes in the same request.
Is ration card member delete online the same as cancelling the card?
No. Deleting a member keeps the card active for the others. Surrender or cancel ends the card for everyone in the household, which is only needed when everyone moves or no member is left.
