Quick steps
- Get past the TNPDS security screenOpen tnpds.gov.in. If a verification page loads first, let it finish and complete the check. Keep VPN off.
- Pick the right status boxFor a card you already hold, use the card holder login. For a request you filed, look for Smart Card Application Status on the home page.
- Enter the mobile number or reference numberCard holders type the registered mobile number and the OTP. Applicants type the reference number from the acknowledgement SMS or slip.
- Read the result and note it downWrite down the card state or the current stage of the request with the date. Officials ask for exactly this when you phone or walk in.
Your TNPDS ration card status can be checked in two ways on tnpds.gov.in: a card holder login with the one time code from your registered mobile shows whether an existing smart card is active, while the Smart Card Application Status option, fed with your reference number, follows a fresh request. Both are free and need no agent.
People mean different things by status. A family whose rice was stopped at the shop asks whether the card has been suspended. A newly married woman wants to know if her new card has been approved. Someone who lost the card wants to know about the reprint. This guide takes each case in turn. For the card copy itself, see our Tamil Nadu ration card download hub.

Two kinds of TNPDS ration card status
Before you open the site, decide which one you need. Families who pick the wrong box often decide the site is broken.
| Your situation | Status to check | What to type |
|---|---|---|
| You already have a smart card and want to see if it works | Card details after login | Registered mobile number and OTP |
| A fresh card request is waiting | Smart Card Application Status | Reference number |
| You asked to add, remove or correct something | Same application status box | Reference number of that request |
| You asked for a reprint after loss | Request status, then the shop | Reference number |
Check whether an existing smart card is active
After the OTP login, the first screen shows your family card. Look at these points to judge its health.
- Card state: an active card shows normally. A card marked suspended, inactive or cancelled will not get rations until the office restores it.
- Member list: check that nobody has dropped off. A missing name usually means a deletion was entered, sometimes by mistake.
- Recent transactions: if the last purchase is months old, the card may be flagged as not in use.
- Shop code: confirm it is still your local shop.
The exact words on the screen can change after an update. Look for the area that lists your family members; the status details sit near it.
Smart ration card status in Tamilnadu for a new or changed card
When you file any request on TNPDS, the portal shows a reference number and usually sends it by SMS. That number is the key to tracking. Keep a screenshot of it.
On the home page, the Smart Card Application Status box asks only for this number. The answer is a stage, not a promise. Our Tamil Nadu application status guide explains each stage in plain words, including what approved but not printed means and how long people usually wait at each step.
Ration card reprint status in Tamil Nadu
If the smart card is lost or damaged, a duplicate is requested through the portal or through e-Sevai. Track that request with its own reference number, the same way as any other request. After approval, the replacement card is usually collected from the shop or from the taluk supply office, and the shop staff may ask you to show Aadhaar and give your fingerprint before handing it over. Your family number does not change, so rice can still be drawn on fingerprint while you wait.
Checking from Chennai or a village without a smartphone
Not everyone has a phone that opens the TNPDS site. Three other routes work.
- The ration shop: the salesman's PoS machine shows him if your card is live and lists the linked members.
- e-Sevai centres: the operator can check the reference number for you. A small service charge may apply.
- The phone line: toll free 1800 425 5901 gives card state over a call after checking your card number.
In Chennai the civil supplies work is split into zones, each with an assistant commissioner office. Elsewhere, the taluk supply office handles your card.
When the status is not what you expected
| Screen message | Reason behind it | Your move |
|---|---|---|
| Invalid reference number | A digit is wrong or the number is from another service | Copy it again from the SMS, with no spaces |
| Card suspended | Months without any purchase, or an inspection on hold | Take the smart card and the head's Aadhaar to your taluk supply officer |
| Request rejected | Documents unclear or address not verified | Read the reason, fix it, and file again |
| Pending for many weeks | Field inspection not done | Call the toll free line with the reference number |
| OTP not delivered | Old number on the card | Follow the mobile change steps on our correction page |
Status of other benefits tied to the smart card
Several state schemes use the smart card number as the family ID. The women's monthly assistance, for example, has its own portal, and you check it with the ration card number on our KMUT status check page. For status pages in other states, see the ration card status guide for all of India.
Questions people ask
How to check ration card status in Tamil Nadu online?
On the TNPDS portal ration card status check is either the card holder OTP login for your card details, or the reference number entered under Smart Card Application Status for a request. Neither costs anything.
What does a suspended TN ration card mean?
It means the card is on hold and the shop cannot issue rations on it. Usually it happens when the card is unused for a long time or a check is pending. The taluk supply office can restore it after verifying the family.
Can I check TNPDS status without the reference number?
For a new request, the reference number is needed. If you lost it, look in the SMS inbox of the phone used to apply, or ask the e-Sevai centre that filed it, since their records keep it.
Is the ration card status page available in Tamil?
The TNPDS portal usually offers a Tamil and English language choice near the top of the page. The numbers you type are the same in either language.
Why does the TNPDS site ask me to prove I am human?
The portal uses a bot check to block automatic traffic. Complete it once, keep VPN off, and the normal page opens. It is not a fake site as long as the address ends in tnpds.gov.in.
How long does a smart card request stay pending?
There is no fixed time published for every request. Field verification by the supply staff takes the longest. If nothing moves for over a month, call the toll free line with your reference number.
