Quick steps
- Check that your state is taking formsSome states accept applications all year, others only in drives. Look at the state table below or the notice board of the block office.
- Gather papers for the whole householdAadhaar of each person, address proof, a family photo, bank details where asked, and proof that nobody is already counted on a different card.
- Register on the portal or visit a centreCreate a login with your mobile and OTP, or let a service centre operator fill the form for you.
- Fill the form carefullySpell names exactly as on Aadhaar, choose the correct district and shop area, and list every member who lives with you.
- Upload, submit and save the receiptUpload clear scans, submit, and save the acknowledgement as a PDF or photo. This number is your only handle on the application.
- Track and download after approvalFollow the status with the acknowledgement number. Once approved, save the e-card and tell your fair price shop dealer.
A ration card online apply request is filed on your state government's portal or at an authorised service centre, never on a central site, and it leads to field verification before any card is issued. Each state sets its own form, documents and timing, and some open new applications only during special windows.
This page tells you who can apply, which papers to collect, and where each state accepts the form, and points to a detailed guide for eleven states. Holding a card already and just want a fresh copy? Use the e-ration card download page instead.

Who can apply for a new ration card
A new card is meant for a family that has none in that state. Common cases are a newly separated family, a household that never applied, and people who moved and surrendered the card elsewhere.
- A baby born into the family, or a bride who has joined it, goes onto the existing card as a member addition, not a fresh application. Use add name in ration card.
- If you moved within India for work, One Nation One Ration Card may let you lift grain with your existing card. A permanent move is a ration card transfer.
- NFSA cards (AAY and PHH) depend on the state's eligibility rules and on its overall coverage limit, so some states add new families only when places are free. Non NFSA state cards follow separate rules; see ration card types.
Ration card documents list
| Document | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar for each person | Proves identity, allows eKYC and stops duplicate cards across states |
| Address proof | Electricity bill, rent agreement, voter ID or a state document |
| Family photo or head of family photo | Printed on the card in many states |
| Income or caste certificate | Only where the state asks it for a priority category |
| Bank passbook | States that pay cash benefits linked to the card |
| Surrender or deletion certificate | For anyone previously listed on a parent's or another state's card |
| Mobile number linked to Aadhaar | OTP during the form and future updates |
Requirements change by state. Where a paper form is still used, our ration card form download page lists where to get it.

States where the card comes from a family database
A few states do not take a separate ration card form at all. In Haryana, BPL and AAY cards are created automatically from verified Family ID data, so you update the family record on the Meri Parivar portal or at an Atal Seva Kendra. Rajasthan links cards to the Jan Aadhaar family record and takes applications through e-Mitra. Madhya Pradesh works through the Samagra family ID and local body verification, and issues an eligibility slip rather than a classic card.
If you live in one of these states, fix the family record first; the ration card follows. Our Haryana guide and Rajasthan guide explain this.
Ration card online apply: mistakes that cause rejection
- Name spelt differently from Aadhaar. Copy it letter by letter.
- A member already listed on a parent's card elsewhere. Get that name removed first, see name removal.
- Blurred uploads. Scan in daylight and check the file before submitting.
- Wrong shop area. The card is tagged to the shop you choose, so pick the one nearest your home.
- No one at home during the inspection. Keep the phone given in the form switched on.
After you submit: status and the new card
Your form goes to an inspector or village official for a home check, then to the supply officer for approval. Each stage of an online ration card application can be followed on our tracking guide, using the receipt number. Once approved, the new ration card appears in the village list and you can download it from the state portal. Members then give fingerprints at the shop for eKYC before the first issue of grain.
Delhi is a good example of how windows work: after a long closed period, it has reopened new applications on e-District under revised eligibility rules, so read the current conditions there before filling the form.
Questions people ask
How to apply ration card online if my state has no online form?
Collect the same documents and apply at the block, circle or taluk supply office, or at a service centre. Assam, Tripura and Manipur mostly use this offline route.
Can I check ration card apply status by application number?
Yes. Every state tracks forms by the acknowledgement or application number. Our application status guide lists where.
Do I need a separate smart ration card apply online form?
No. States like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have printed QR coded smart cards for approved families. You apply for a ration card in the normal way, and the smart card follows if your state issues one.
How to download new ration card after approval?
Open the card details option on the state portal, type the new number from the approval message, and keep that screen saved in PDF form. Our download guide covers each state.
Can a separated family apply for its own ration card online?
Yes, in most states. Members leave the old card first, and the new family then applies with that deletion proof and its own address.
Does every state accept new applications right now?
No. Karnataka and Odisha, for example, open their new card windows from time to time. Check the state portal notice or ask the supply office before you apply.
